Indian Railways is the national railway system of India, consisting of 17 zones and 71 divisions spread across the country. Each division is managed by a Divisional Railway Manager (DRM). There are is list of all 17 zones and their respective headquarters:

The railway jobs are classified into four groups: Group A, Group B (Gazetted), Group C, and Group D (Non-gazetted). Each group comprises both technical and non-technical cadre positions.

Group A Posts Recruitment:

  • Recruitment for Group A posts is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
  • Selection is based on a written exam, interview, and/or group discussion, as required.
  • Exams conducted for Group A recruitment include the Civil Service Exam, Engineering Service Exam, and Combined Medical Service Examination.
  • Services included through the Civil Services Exam:

  • Services included through the Combined Engineering Services Exam:

  • Group B Posts Recruitment:
  • Direct recruitment for Group B posts is not available.
  • Group C employees are promoted to Group B officer positions.
  • Group C Posts Recruitment:
  • Recruitment for Group C posts, both technical and non-technical, is conducted by 19 Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) across all zones of Indian Railways.
  • Non-Technical Posts: Examples include Assistant Station Masters, Trains Clerks, Clerks, Ticket Collectors, Commercial Apprentice, Traffic Apprentice, and others.
  • Technical Posts: Examples include engineers in the fields of Signal, Telecommunication, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and others.
  • Group D Posts Recruitment:
  • Recruitment for Group D positions is done by the Railway Recruitment Cell (RRC) at the divisional level.
  • Examples of Group D posts: Gunman, Safaiwala, Trackman, Peon, Tracker, and others.
